Zanzibar Archipelago

Zanzibar, Pemba and Mafia

Zanzibar travel info and tips - Zanzibar excursions

The picturesque islands of the Zanzibar archipelago

The islands of Zanzibar (actually Unguja), Pemba and Mafia together form the Zanzibar Archipelago. On these picturesque islands you have a perfect complement to safaris and mountain tours in Tanzania. You will find some of the most beautiful beaches in the Indian Ocean and, especially on Pemba and Mafia, tranquil places away from the usual tourist crowds where you can explore undisturbed.

We have put together a few of the best day trips and excursions in Zanzibar for you on our website.

Nature is blessed with incredible tropical lushness, consisting of vast grassy plains, coconut palms and exceptionally diverse vegetation. You will find enchanted primeval forests, picturesque ruins, spice plantations, rice fields, fruit trees and captivatingly beautiful, endless beaches. Time and again you can see humpback whales that call the surrounding sea their home.

The island of Pemba, also known as Green Island, is located about 50 km above Unguja and is about half the size of Zanzibar. Pemba is one of the jewels of the Indian Ocean, surrounded by a coral reef that is home to 300 species of fish and coral. From December to March, you can watch sea turtles lay their eggs on Mnemba beach. Chumbe is also a real jewel, lying on a bed of coral fossils and is one of the most beautiful destinations on the island.

Unique taste experiences

Zanzibar is one of the most famous and impressive seaside resorts in East Africa and is often used to refer to the entire archipelago, although the archipelago consists of about forty smaller islands and the two main islands. The Zanzibar archipelago belongs to the Spice Islands, as they were located in the center of the historical spice route. In the interior of the island you can discover the diverse spice world of Zanzibar. Explore the fascinating villages and farms and see for yourself the unique taste experience on a spice tour. Taste the tasty spices and fresh fruits on site.

A paradise for divers and snorkelers

The islands are low lying and partly surrounded by coral reefs that form lagoons. The coastline is sometimes very rugged and has numerous peninsulas and bays that form many natural harbors. The turquoise waters surrounding the islands are ideal for snorkeling and diving, as there are beautiful corals and offshore wrecks. Diving in Zanzibar is mainly in the northern region and in the fantastic marine parks of Mnemba and Chumbe islands. The islands are famous for their impressive underwater world. Due to the proximity to the equator, the weather here is tropical and warm. See for yourself on a Safari Blue snorkel tour, which we will gladly organize for you.

Stonetown - the highlights

The enchanting beauty of Zanzibar's Arabic-influenced architecture and cultural heritage is incomparable to any other place in the world. The 19th century Sultan's Palace facing the sea and the UNESCO protected Stonetown are a testimony to this.

Stonetown - the historic capital of Zanzibar - is located on the west coast of Zanzibar and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2000. The town became known in the 19th century as a trading center for spices such as cloves, cinnamon and nutmeg and was an important hub in the slave trade. Today, Stonetown is a vibrant city with narrow streets, colorful markets and a rich cultural history.
The House of Wonders, the Forodhani Gardens Market - offering traditional meat and fish dishes and snacks - or the Slave Market Museum are just some of the highlights you can expect on a guided Stonetown tour.

Maybe a trip to Prison Island is also interesting for you? For some, one of the most fascinating things to do here. Prison Island is the famous former prison island where slaves were imprisoned and people with terminal illnesses were housed.  Today it is a shelter for giant land tortoises, some of which are over 100 years old.
