Mount Meru

The third highest mountain in Africa

Facts

Mount Meru is the third highest mountain in Africa (4562 m), located about 65 km southwest of Kilimanjaro and is affectionately called Kilimanjaro's little brother.

It is nestled in Arusha National Park - named after the surrounding city of Arusha, Tanzania's second largest city - and was formed by volcanic activity. All around, you are in the territory of the Maasai monads, who roam the countryside with their herds.

Mount Meru is an ancient, now inactive volcano that was Tanzania's highest mountain in ancient times, but after numerous explosions and eruptions lost so much mass and height that now Kilimanjaro is Tanzania's (and all of Africa's) highest mountain.

Huge bamboo forests cover it up to about 3000 meters, from where green flower meadows with wildlife of buffaloes, antelopes and giraffes then extend.

The climb here is even more challenging than the climb to Kilimanjaro and is popular for acclimatization before the tour to and on Kilimanjaro.

Climbing Mount Meru

Climbing Mount Meru is the perfect preparation for climbing Kilimanjaro. Mount Meru trekking provides optimal acclimatization and increases the chances of reaching the Uhuru summit on Kilimanjaro.

But also the conquest of Mount Meru alone is already an adventure. Particularly high technical requirements are not necessary, but there should be good surefootedness to reach the summit of Mount Meru.

The summit of Mount Meru - Socialist Peak - can be climbed on mountain tours within four days. There are only two huts on the mountain: the Miriakamba hut and the Saddle hut.

From the Saddle hut you start the impressive summit climb at night. After about an hour you will reach Rhino Point (3800 meters) and after another four to five hours you will reach the summit.

From the summit you will be able to see the impressive Meru Crater, a crater about 4km wide, formed by the last volcanic eruptions.
